reviewed and amended annually.

The Rotary Burlington Music Festival is a member of the OMFA, Ontario Music Festivals Association and the FCMF, the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals. We are entitled to send participants to compete at the Provincial level. Winners from the Provincials could be recommended by a provincial administration to compete at Nationals.

General

1. The name of this Festival is ROTARY BURLINGTON MUSIC FESTIVAL.

2. The Festival proceedings are the responsibility of the Board of Directors.

3. All matters not dealt with in these Rules and Regulations will be referred to the Board. Their decision will be final and binding.

4. The Festival reserves the right to refuse any entry or cancel any class. Excepting the above, entry fees will not be refunded.

5. The Festival reserves the right to divide or combine classes.

6. In age limit classes, age will be determined as of Dec 31 of the current year. Proof of age may be requested.

7. All classes are open to amateurs. An amateur shall be defined as: “any person whose principal means of livelihood is not derived from the profession of music”.

8. PLEASE NOTE The Festival runs from Monday to Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Participants are expected to play at their scheduled time. Absolutely no changes will be made once the programme has been printed.

online registration

1. Online registration will be open from August 25, 2011 to midnight September 30, 2011.

   All entries must be received by September 30 and accompanied by the correct fee stated for each class. Late entries will not be accepted.

2. No receipts will be mailed and entry fees will not be refunded.

3. Note: A $20 administration fee will apply for any requested changes made to an existing registration.  Any amount less than $5 will NOT be refunded.  Please ensure that your registration is accurate before submitting.

4. A piece may not be used in more than one class.

5. Participants may not use a selection that they have performed in a previous Rotary Burlington Music Festival.

6. Participants are limited to one entry per class, unless otherwise noted.

7. Participants must enter at their current grade level of study. However, they may enter one class at a higher level.

8. For all duet, duo, trio, quartet, and ensemble classes, only one participant must register and pay the class fee. Please remember to list all duet, duo, trio and quartet partners.

9. Participants’ schedules showing dates of competition will be forwarded to the student, teacher and accompanist. These schedules must be shown to any Festival Official when requested.

Adjudication

1. Adjudicators’ decisions are final.

2. Adjudicators may not evaluate their own students.

3. Participants may be required to certify that the Festival rules have been followed. If an infringement occurs, adjudication may be given, but no mark will be awarded.

4. Minimum mark to receive a gold medal in competitive classes is 80.

5. The adjudicator will discuss the performance of each participant but only the marks of the medal winners will be publicly announced. All participants will receive the adjudicators’ written comments.

6. Questions should be directed to the secretary or the festival coordinator, not the adjudicator.

7. Our adjudicators may recommend participants from the Rotary Burlington Music Festival to compete in the Ontario Provincial Music Festival, which is held in June.

Awards

1. The adjudicators will choose recipients of awards.

2. Every participant will receive a participation ribbon and a written adjudication. Marks will be assigned and medals presented for solos, duets, duos, trios and quartets in competitive classes. A minimum mark of 80 must be achieved in order to receive a gold medal.

3. To be eligible for an individual scholarship in piano, voice, music theatre, strings, speech, winds or guitar, participants must enter and compete in a minimum of three solo classes in the same discipline. One of the three classes must be a Canadian Class. Canadian music should be entered in these classes, even if it fits into another category (ie 20th/21st Century).  

4. Recipients of scholarships must have one mark of 85 or more. 

5. To be eligible for a scholarship, choirs or orchestras must have a mark of 85 or more.

6. Winners of scholarships will be chosen by the adjudicators and need not necessarily be Gold Medal winners, but may be participants who, in the opinion of the adjudicators, show the greatest potential talent.

7. Scholarships will be presented at the Grand Festival Concert.

8. Adjudicators will recommend students to perform at the Grand Festival Concert.

9. Two new adjudicators will be present at the Grand Festival Concert to select recipients of the Mark Irish Memorial Scholarships for The Most Promising Student and runner-up, the Robert E. Elstone Memorial Scholarship and The Most Promising Young Performer scholarship and runner-up. Winners of these scholarships are not eligible to receive the same award in the following year.

Performance

1. RCM stands for the Royal Conservatory of Music. CC stands for Conservatory Canada.

2. The most recent Conservatory Syllabus edition must be used.

3. All pieces must be performed from memory. The use of music will result in adjudication only, with no mark given. Exceptions: Duets, Duos, Trios, Quartets, Ensembles, String Sonatas, Winds, Choral, Prose Reading and Bible Reading.

4. Unless otherwise specified, all instrumental test pieces must be played without repeats. Da Capos and Dal Segnos must be observed.

5. Time restricted classes will be timed by a stopwatch ... overtimes will receive adjudication but no mark.

6. Instrumental and vocal participants must provide their own accompanist. No taped accompaniment will be accepted.  (Exceptions are noted within each class.)

7. All participants must supply an original copy of their music for the adjudicator and accompanist.

8. Absolutely no photocopies of copyrighted music will be allowed. The use of photocopies will result in disqualification.

9. The use of cameras or video recorders is not allowed during performance or adjudication. This practice can prove distracting for participants, adjudicators and spectators.
